Final Project Musings

Five things I learned about type:

  1. Even text spaced tightly together can be legible. It works even better when it is in one paragraph box and not multiple little boxes.
  2. Typography can be fun. Before this class, I did not think I would enjoy it. This publication made me realize how fun type can be.
  3. I learned type can represent certain things, like fish. I spent hours looking at fish species trying to find the right one to match the classification. It was fun analyzing fish in the context of type.
  4. I learned what an amazing typographer Herb Lubalin was. He was so good at what he did. He had a way with type that only he had. It is hard to come close to his briliance.
  5. Rules are meant to be followed to start out, but then are meant to be broken. A grid is a good guideline but towards the end you can break it and make it more interesting.
  6. Changing orientation of type makes it more interesting. If everything faced the same way, it would be boring.

Five things I should have learned:

  1. Shapes can be good containers for type. (Jeff)
  2. Patterns can be interesting mixed with type. (JenyAnn)
  3. Negative white space can be good in relation to type. Minimal colors, including white, are good. (Delaney)
  4. It creates a nice spread when the pages are reversed out from each other. (Kyler)
  5. Every spread can be completely different but still feel unified. (Bri)
  6. Minimal designs work well. (Kelsey)
  7. Letter big can be aesthetically pleasing. You can turn paragraphs wonky every which way and it can still be readable and interesting. (Jane)
  8. White space can be good and interesting to create designs. (Alyssa)
  9. Texture works well with type. (Kayla)

EXTRA CREDIT: Five things I refuse to learn:
  1. There is nothing I refuse to learn. It is good to learn new styles and techniques. That is why we are at school to have an open mind and learn new things.
